The stupidity of Artificial intelligence (AI)

Highlight

AI

AI is smart and it is going to be even smarter in coming days. Over the past few months, the heavy weights in political and business realm have basically agreed that we have entered a new technological era. AI was meant to change everything literally. However, soon after building a neural net the foundation of (Artificial intelligence) in 2012, Dr.Geoffrey in University of Toronto often referred as godfather of Artificial Intelligence has resigned from Google citing  grave concerns over AI in near future.

Internation monetary fund has been warned that 40% of all jobs around the world would be impacted by AI. E commerce giant Amazon is facing a unique problem wherein books written by AI has made their way to e commerce website to be sold.  These pseudo books are at first glance hard to figure out if they are written.

Another shocking event took place in a small town of Spain where AI generated AI photos of young girls popped up on social media without their knowledge sends tech world into despair and shock. Women from different countries who have experienced same things and are unsure how to handle it have contacted one of the victim’s mother Miriyam Al Adib a genecologist by profession who initiated a support group of victim’s family through her profound social media profile to spread the issue at the centre of Spanish public debate.

Kate is one of thousands of people who are victims of AI. AI powered deepfake technology has been used to tarnish Kate’s image in U.K. Scrolling through her twitter feed one day Kate found that her face was used in a porn video and it was made it like it was her. In the past, many high-profile celebrities and politicians were targeted through deepfake. AI generated deepfake pictures and videos were not always porn, some were made of comedic value. Like revenge porn, deepfake pornography is an image based sexual exploitation.

With just good amount of video wherein targets just look straight to the camera would suffice deepfake algorithms to extrapolate from it and then reconstruct the face on the destination video.

Availability of AI deepfake software make the situation even worse. Until relatively recently to get access to deepfake software was an uphill task and then to create sexual abuse videos for an average person required some sort of technical skills. But now, there are so many applications that can be operated by anyone over the age of twelve. What is more alarming is that it is not the dark web. It is in the app store, right in front of us.

On the other side companies like The New York Times are up in the arms and taking AI companies to the courts over not fair use of their published data. This is up and down copy infringement case. Other than legal walls, Reddit company is charging a fee from Google to be able to access its website. Any other search engine company, AI training company simply can not get access to Reddit.com their social media website.

If you have built something which is trained on copyright material and when AI Chat GPT spit out the results that is pretty much identical to the copyright material, well that is not AI magic perhaps that is just plagiarism.

Most of us initially thought that AI as super intelligent robot who are alien invaders coming to take away our jobs and replace human being with their advance artificial intelligence at work place. However, after much hype of AI and CHATGPT, AI bubble is deflating. All of us think that AI’s intelligence is way more than an average person. But in reality, it turns out to be a bit dumber.  It has been more than a year and we still do not know the repercussions of AI, since AI companies are asking people to buy their AI products subscriptions.

AI algorithms are programmed using vast amount of data from the database, thus AI systems fetch results that would contain inherent biases from historical human decisions.

Additionally, we cannot fully trust AI results as it perpetuates gender, racial, socioeconomic, and other biases that would be discriminatory and contentious in nature.
